Jonathan succeeded Joel Jackson as Photo Club Chair in 2022. He became interested in bird photography while stationed at the Naval Hospital in Okinawa. While scouting the island for landscape subjects, he kept running into Japanese bird photographers taking amazing photos of tropical birds. The fast-paced action of bird photography combined with the hunt for birds in the field was instantly appealing to him, and he has been learning the art and craft of bird photography ever since. Shortly after retiring from the Navy, Jonathan moved to Tampa. Learning about Florida's imperiled and migratory birds inspired him to learn more about wildlife conservation photography. His mission is to help people connect with and appreciate the natural world, with the belief that greater understanding leads to deeper caring, encouraging decisions and behavior that benefit habitat and wildlife conservation.

A member since the 1990s, Mary has led a weekly bluebird monitoring program at Flatwoods Park in Tampa since 2005. However, her favorite birds are hummingbirds because they are so tiny and beautiful and their aerial acrobatics are fun to watch. Mary was lucky to grow up in a family that loved nature and saw the value of protecting it. She became a serious birder about 25 years ago. As the Recycling Coordinator for the Pasco County School District, part of her job was helping schools create outdoor learning centers, and that involved using native plants to attract native birds, insects, and mammals. So she began paying more attention to the connection between plants and animals and started learning to identify birds, butterflies, and mammals in their gardens.

Jim has had a lifelong interest in birds. He moved to Tampa in the 1970s to join a nonprofit law firm providing pro bono services to low income persons. After raising four children (including two Eagle Scouts) with his wife, he decided it was  time to get more serious about birding. He joined Tampa Audubon in 2016 and was elected to the Board of Directors in 2021. Jim enjoys the social aspects of birding, including learning from some very good birders, but he finds it impossible to pick a favorite bird -- he loves them all!

Ann started on the Board of Directors in 1990 as our Secretary. She later served as Chapter President was again elected as Chapter President in June 2021. Called “wading birds’ best human friend” by National Audubon Society (https://www.hillsboroughcounty.org/en/newsroom/2018/05/07/coastal-birds-best-human-friend-earns-conservation-award), she won the 2018 winner of the Theodore Roosevelt Hillsborough Forever Conservation Award and served as the Regional Coordinator for Audubon Florida's Coastal Island Sanctuaries for over 30 years, contributing to the knowledge and protection of aquatic bird species that rely on the Sanctuaries. Born and raised in Gainesville, Ann now lives in south Hillsborough County. She has trouble choosing a favorite bird, as the more she learns about any one species of bird, the more she wants to know about them. Ann has a passion for protecting birds and their habitats, which results in important benefits for people, too: clean air and water, and beautiful recreation areas.
