Thanks Irwin, for the Bluebird Boxes Rigs!

By Mary Miller, Bluebird Trail Coordinator

Carrollwood Village Park asked if we could help them put up a couple of bluebird boxes in their park. TAS member Irwin Schuster is a great carpenter, and we go to him whenever someone needs bluebird boxes. We asked him to build two Bluebird Box Riggs for the park.

In turn, Irwin built two Bluebird Box Riggs. Each rig consists of a bluebird box, a predator guard, and an 8’ metal post.

Each bluebird box is standard size with 1 1/2 " entry holes, a side opening door, ventilation at the top of both sides, and a PVC roof with a long overhang. Each metal stove top predator guard is 2’ long and has a mesh top. The metal pole is 8’ long, and has a wooden slat that is screwed into the post about 2 feet below the top of the post.

Each box will be attached to an 8' metal post that will be installed 2' into the ground. The predator guard will rest on the wooden slat below the box. The mesh cover will prevent predators, such as snakes, from climbing up the box where the chicks are nesting.

Thank you Irwin, for crafting these rigs!
