Birding Santa Marta & the Atlantic Coast

Tampa Audubon Society is thrilled to announce a birding expedition to Colombia February 18 - 26, 2026, focusing on the Santa Marta region and the Atlantic Coast. This journey promises to be an unforgettable adventure for bird enthusiasts, offering opportunities to explore some of the most diverse and ecologically rich areas in the country.


Highlights of the Trip


Salamanca National Park

Our first stop will be the renowned Salamanca National Park. Situated along Colombia's northern coast, this park is a haven for bird species, especially those inhabiting mangrove ecosystems. Birders can expect to see a variety of coastal species. Target species will include Bicolored Conebill, Pied and Russet-throated Puffbirds, Sapphire-bellied and Sapphire-throated Hummingbirds, as well as a plethora of migratory birds.


Los Flamencos Sanctuary

Next, we will visit the Los Flamencos Sanctuary, famed for its vibrant population of American Flamingos. This sanctuary, located in La Guajira, offers a unique opportunity to observe these majestic birds in their natural habitat. specialties such as the Tocuyo Sparrow, Chestnut Piculet, Pearl Kite, Aplomado Falcon and Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl. The saltpans and wetlands attract a myriad of other bird species as well, making it a prime birding spot.


Forests in La Guajira

La Guajira's dry forests are home to a specialized group of birds adapted to this arid environment. Participants will have the chance to see endemic species such as the Vermilion Cardinal and the Chestnut Piculet. The stark beauty of the desert landscape provides a stunning backdrop for birdwatching.


Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

The crown jewel of our expedition is the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. This isolated mountain range boasts the highest concentration of endemic bird species on the planet. Birders will relish the opportunity to spot the Blue-naped Chlorophonia, Santa Marta Parakeet, Santa Marta Screech-Owl, and many other rare species. The lush cloud forests and pristine habitats of this region are a testament to Colombia's incredible biodiversity.
