Dear Birding Enthusiasts,
As the holiday season approaches, we are excited to announce the 125th Annual Christmas Bird Count! This long-standing tradition brings together bird lovers from all walks of life to contribute to one of the most significant citizen science projects in the world.
A century-old tradition since its inception in 1900 by ornithologist Frank Chapman, the Christmas Bird Count has grown into a beloved event that spans the globe. Each year, thousands of volunteers count birds in their local areas, providing invaluable data that helps track the health and status of bird populations.
How You Can Participate
Whether you're an experienced birder or a beginner, everyone is welcome to join the count. Here's how you can get involved:
1. Find a Local Count Circle: Check the National Audubon website to find a count circle near you.
Tampa Audubon will take part in the Alafia Banks count and Tampa count. Participants do not have to join all day—we welcome everyone to come and help count for whatever portion of the day that you can. If you live in our count area, you can even just report the species that you see from your home!
2. Sign Up: Register with the circle's coordinator to participate in the count.
Dec. 15: Alafia Banks Count. To join us in the Tampa Audubon sector, contact Mary Keith. For locations outside Tampa Audubon's sector, contact Charlie Fisher.
Jan. 4: Tampa Count. To join us in the Tampa Audubon sector, contact Mary Keith. For locations outside the Tampa Audubon sector, contact David Bowman.
3. Join the Count: On your assigned count day between December 14 and January 5, head out and start counting birds!
